Colorado Landscape Photography
Colorado has been an enduring subject of my photography, from broad mountain vistas and changing skies to intimate scenes of water, rock, forest and wildflowers. I am particularly drawn to the way light, weather and season continually transform the landscape.
My landscape photography in Colorado is centered in the San Juan mountains of Southern Colorado, with much of my work coming from the area surrounding Pagosa Springs. These landscapes offer an extraordinary variety of subjects—from expansive mountain views to quiet streams, autumn aspen groves or winter scenes shaped by snow and changing light.
I look for the moments when the landscape reveals something unexpected: a particular quality of light, a striking combination of color and form, or a quiet relationship between the elements of the natural world.
The San Juan Mountains and Pagosa Springs
The mountains surrounding Pagosa Springs provide an especially rich setting for landscape photography. The San Juan Mountains combine rugged peaks, high mountain forests, streams, changing weather and dramatic seasonal transitions within a relatively compact region.
For me, photographing this landscape is an ongoing process rather than a search for a single iconic view. Returning to familiar places reveals how different they can become with the changing seasons, weather and light. A mountain slope photographed in autumn can become an entirely different subject after a winter storm or beneath the changing light of early morning.
Many of these photographs are the result of repeated exploration of the Southern Colorado landscape and a continuing search for those brief conditions in which light, weather and landscape come together.
